Reimagining the Modern Health Journey: How digital, AI, and lifestyle tools are increasing patient agency in weight and metabolic health
The rapid rise in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists is reshaping the treatment landscape for obesity and metabolic disease. Yet while these therapies can produce significant health benefits, there is growing recognition that pharmacotherapy alone is not enough to sustain long-term health behavior change.
The Stanford Center for Digital Health convened a workshop bringing together clinicians, researchers, tech developers, and industry stakeholders, to explore how digital tools, artificial intelligence, and lifestyle interventions can support a more holistic and patient-centered approach to metabolic health for individuals using GLP-1 RA therapies.
This report summarizes the key themes and recommendations emerging from those discussions. Participants emphasized that GLP-1 RA therapies should be understood not as standalone solutions, but as potential catalysts for sustained behavior change. The workshop highlighted the importance of longitudinal and personalized support systems that integrate digital tools with real-world environments and community support, as well as the need for broader measures of health and wellbeing. The discussion also identified key evidence gaps regarding long-term adherence, effective intervention design, meaningful outcome measures, and the role of personalization across different phases of treatment. Participants stressed that progress in this area will require continued collaboration across healthcare, technology, research, and public health sectors.
