Generative AI for Health in Low & Middle Income Countries

Main content start

Generative AI (GenAI) has the potential to transform healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), offering unprecedented opportunities to improve access, engagement, and health outcomes, but this potential is still largely untapped. How can AI-driven tools be effectively implemented in low-resource settings? What barriers must be addressed to ensure equitable adoption?

The Stanford Center for Digital Health partnered with the Stanford Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences to provide the most comprehensive analysis to date of GenAI in healthcare. Drawing on extensive research—including two roundtable events, expert interviews, a quantitative survey with over 100 respondents, a review of key GenAI accelerator programs, and case studies of AI-driven interventions—this report highlights how GenAI is already being harnessed in healthcare contexts, and provides practical recommendations for funders, implementers, and policymakers working to harness GenAI to strengthen health systems and advance equity.

This work benefited from the insights of 54 different experts, encompassing perspectives from academia, funding bodies, implementers, and health system leaders. CDH is immensely grateful for their contributions to this work.
